Your Money, Your Goals training promotes financial empowerment

By Becky Hagen Jokela, Extension educator in family resiliency

Your Money, Your Goals (YMYG) is a financial empowerment toolkit created by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The toolkit gives service agency staff information and ideas for use in assisting their clients. The goal is to help clients understand their own financial situations and connect to resources in their communities.

Minnesota was one of 12 state cooperative extension programs that held YMYG training events in 2017. This past October, University of Minnesota Extension family resiliency educators provided four webinars and three in-person train-the-trainer sessions on the YMYG toolkit.

Financial empowerment instructors, case managers and other staff from service agencies across Minnesota were among those attending the training sessions, which included an orientation to the YMYG toolkit. The sessions are designed to increase the knowledge and skills of participants so they, in turn, can assist clients in their communities.

U of M Extension YMYG training sessions reached 43 professionals across the state from a variety of service organizations last year, with participants giving the training positive reviews. For example, pre- and post- surveys of 13 participants in Minneapolis and Fergus Falls indicated they had increased their knowledge of financial capability principles and intended to use what they learned.

One participant said, "I had an amazing ‘ah-ha’ moment today. My organization is focused on build[ing] a culture of achievement and . . . on children going to college. Today helped me to commit to talking to my families on how they will pay for college."
