Thank Our Staff as May Begins

Trish Olson, Assistant to the Associate Dean

When my children were growing up, if you looked out the window in the early hours of May 1, you would see kids scurrying around with small homemade baskets filled with treats and flowers. They would hang a basket on a door knob, ring the doorbell, and run away so the gift-bearer would not be known.

May 1 represents multiple celebrations around the world. As in my neighborhood, May 1 is celebrated as a welcome to summer in many countries. Simultaneously, May 1 is also celebrated as International Workers' Day, or Labour Day, across the globe. Talk about a day with an identity crisis!

Perhaps in this first week of May, we can combine the best of both international days of celebrations on May 5. This is when University of Minnesota Extension celebrates Staff Day — a day of training, connecting, and celebrating those who provide the backbone to our Extension work. Staff are invited to the St. Paul campus this year to learn, tour, share, celebrate, and welcome spring on our handsome campus that absolutely explodes with the beauty of blooming trees, spring flowers, and scents of spring (not talking about the barns here!).

We welcome those who are able to attend Staff Day and THANK YOU for your important contribution to meeting the educational needs of Minnesota residents.
